Good News!

Since Archer went into the hospital, I have felt so many “shoes dropping” in my life. I joke that I must be an octopus that wears shoes, and I wonder when the shoes will stop dropping.

From being told Archer’s diagnosis, to losing him, to hearing that I have a variant of PolG that can present itself, to IVF taking forever and a day just to start – It’s been one after another with the shoes.

HOWEVER…

We got good news today! I feel like a giant weight has been lifted.

Let me give you some back story first:

When you go through IVF for a genetic purpose, you have to get a genetic ‘probe’ created, telling the doctors which embryos are “good” or “bad.” For us, good is no Alpers, and bad is having Alpers.

To create this probe, Theo and I have to be genetically tested, which can take weeks. Then we must be accepted by the lab to go through the genetic ‘probe’ creation. After that, family members need to get tested. Then they can start creating this ‘probe.’

Being told that you will have 421 genes (for women) and 381 genes (for men) tested is scary, plus we have to wait a minimum of three weeks to get the results. I have been trying to be patient as we wait for the results, but during this time, I was worried about all of the genetic results that would come back.

Would another shoe drop? Would they find something that would rule out more embryos and take longer to have a baby?

Today, a little email notification popped up on my phone. It was the laboratory with my results. I nervously opened it.

NOTHING! (besides PolG, of course)

Now we had to wait for Theo’s results. Hours later, we got them back.
Finally, good news! We have nothing that is going to rule out extra embryos. The only thing we must be concerned about with our baby is PolG.

That’s right, the shoes stayed on this octopus’ foot today!
